On Day 1 as mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani immediately signed a series of executive orders aimed at confronting the city’s housing crisis. These moves build directly on the themes of his campaign, particularly tenant protections and expanding housing supply.

Executive Order 1

Perhaps the most headline‑grabbing action was the revitalization of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants. This office had existed in prior administrations but had been defunded and deprioritized. Mamdani’s order reestablishes it as a central body for coordinating city efforts to defend renters’ rights, improve housing conditions, and crack down on negligent landlords.

Mamdani also created two new task forces that aim to accelerate housing development and reduce bureaucratic drag...

Executive Order 2

The second EO creates the LIFT (Land Inventory Fast Track) Task Force, which will focus on identifying city‑owned land that could be used for housing development and coordinating efforts to move those sites into production quickly. The goal is to clear one major inventory benchmark by July 1, 2026.

Executive Order 3

The third EO establishes the SPEED (Streamlining Procedures to Expedite Equitable Development) Task Force is tasked with surveying permitting and administrative processes across city agencies to identify bottlenecks that slow down housing construction. By recommending ways to streamline approvals and cut red tape, the idea is to make it easier and faster to build new units across affordability levels.

Together, these initiatives target both where housing can be built and how quickly it gets built, addressing two of the biggest structural barriers in New York’s housing market.
